Well we have reached a point where we are counting each month as a birthday and our lovely daughter has now turned 5! A real turning point in ones life when the ability to grasp objects firmly and confidently insert them into ones mouth with ease is a mastered skill. When naked, she can pee with the precision of Annie Oakley striking moving targets meters away. She belches like a sailor and breaks wind like a lumberjack yet has a smile that will melt even the coldest heart. And even though she has mastered all of these great skills, SHE STILL DOESN’T KNOW HER OWN NAME!
Now I'm sure my wife and I are partially to blame for this. We are constantly referring to her by a bevy of nicknames forgetting the importance of name recognition and her ability to develop a sense of self. It's not like she will go through life never responding to peoples comments though. Here are a few scenarios where she might think she heard someone say her name:
1. "Ohhh, look at the cute little bunny."
2. "I don't want to burst your bub-ble, but..."
3. "Did you know that the squirrel monkey is one of the most fascinating primates?"
4. "Man! Those are some really puny pants you have on!"
5. "Pardon me, can you dance the cha-cha?"
or my personal favorite "bunny cha-cha britches" (couldn’t come up with a sentence for that one)
Needless to say I have now started integrating in her actual human name in the hope that by the time she can hold a conversation with other's of her species she will be referring to herself by her birth name rather than saying "You Nathan, me Bunny cha-cha britches"
(It would be pretty funny messing with her head though!)
